Matt Cabak is the acting Director for the Accident Investigations and Safety Recommendations Division in the FAA's Office of Accident Investigation and Prevention (AVP). In this role, he leads the FAA’s response to major accidents and leads the processing of Safety Recommendations from NTSB and FAA investigators. Concurrently, Matt is also the FAA's technical lead for the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST), the CAST-ICAO Common Taxonomy Team (CICTT) and the Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) program. He collaborates with safety professionals in the world-wide Commercial Aviation Industry to identify and mitigate risk by collecting and analyzing data from Voluntary Safety Reporting Programs and blending that with information from automated data collection systems. Prior to this role, Matt served as an Investigator and the Team Lead for the Accident Investigation Division in AVP. Before joining AVP, he served as the Group Manager of the Compliance Services Group, and the acting Deputy Director for Safety in the FAA Air Traffic Organization’s Safety and Technical Training Office. His operational experience includes duties as an Enroute Air Traffic Control Specialist, an Operations Supervisor, and a Supervisory Traffic Management Coordinator as well as over 1,000 hours as a Private Pilot. Matt is certified as a Senior Air Safety Investigator and a Senior Aviation Safety Professional from the Department of Transportation’s Transportation Safety Institute and is a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI).
