Douglas J. Willey has been an aviation professional for over 30 years. Twenty-eight of those years have been with United Airlines flying five different aircraft types in line operations. He currently flies as a captain on the Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. He has fulfilled positions within United Airlines as a Pilot Instructor and a Flight Standards Pilot.
Concurrently, Doug has been an active member and volunteer for the Air Line Pilots Association, International where he serves in his present position as Vice Chair of Aviation Safety within the Aviation Safety Organization. Previously, he has volunteered as an Air Traffic Control Liaison and a Safety Representative. During a five-year sabbatical from United Airlines, Doug worked in the avionics retrofit industry working with airlines and private operators to upgrade their flight deck technology.
Doug earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania while earning a commission in the United States Navy via the Reserve Officer Training Corps. During his active and reserve duty naval career, Doug served on both surface combat ships and as a Naval Aviator operating the P-3 Orion and the C20G (Gulfstream GIV) globally. Though discovered later in life, Doug’s passion for aviation has led him to pursue diverse paths to include flying tailwheel aircraft and helicopters in the general aviation community and as a lifetime member of the Experimental Aviation Association. The more he learns, the more he wishes to explore.
Doug resides in Lakeside, Michigan with his wife, Kristin, and their menagerie of four dogs and a cat. When not wrangling his furry family members, he enjoys cooking, wine tasting, bird watching, and reading.
